HOW DID YOU AND BLACKLIDGE MEET?
Brittany Blacklidge and I have a mutual friend who I have known with for many years. Through that relationship, I became involved in helping Blacklidge with specific projects. Brittany asked me to come on full time as General Manager in 2014.

My educational background is in Chemical Engineering. I have both a Bachelor of Science from Lehigh University and a Masters from the University of Connecticut in the subject. After college, I followed a career outside of the chemical industry in product management, marketing and ultimately, general management for a range of companies. Blacklidge provided the opportunity to come back into a chemical-based industry. I’ve really enjoyed combining principles from chemical engineering and my career experience to help propel Blacklidge forward.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU DO A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE, EXACTLY?
As the General Manager, I’m responsible for everything related to achieving business goals. There are four strategic pillars I follow:

The first is discipline in execution – basically, getting things done. The second is driving innovation in our products and service. Third, is to help Blacklidge become the best-in-class service provider in the industry. And finally, we are focusing on employee and organizational growth and fulfillment. I want to make sure our employees are living full, balanced lives and that our core values and family come through in our business.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT SINCE STARTING AT BLACKLIDGE?
Playing a part in helping bring our leadership team together to develop a common vision. Blacklidge is a company that delivers performance and reliability. These are the components of our core strategic idea and they have driven business in a radical way.

SPEAKING OF STRATEGY, WHAT IS THE PLAN FOR THE FUTURE OF BLACKLIDGE?
We have a two-part plan:

1. Transform our service relationship with customers into something exceptional
2. Invest in research and development to spearhead innovation

We’re already changing the way customers look at suppliers like Blacklidge. We don’t just want to provide a product; we want to be a business partner. We’re skilled at anticipating future needs for our clients and we’re equipped to eliminate hassles. We provide the products our clients need when they need them, and our innovations are already driving down cost.

As we implement this plan, I imagine further geographic expansion for Blacklidge in the coming years.

CAN YOU SPEAK MORE TO PRODUCT INNOVATION IN THE ASPHALT/EMULSION INDUSTRY?
The idea of product innovation in this industry is innovative in itself. Historically, the industry has gravitated toward ideas that have been around for many years. Blacklidge employs experts who understand the fundamental science of roads, and our deep knowledge base drives our ability to create new, advanced products. We’ve already developed products that extend the life of roads and will impact people and communities for years to come. Our new products improve both the construction process and the ongoing life of the roads by reducing future maintenance costs.

Another innovation Blacklidge is pioneering is the use of recycled products, like tires and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), in our products. Developing environmentally-friendly products that perform in a measurable way is an area where Blacklidge can really make a difference.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?
Spending time with my family – my wife and two sons. I also love getting outside and scuba diving and trail biking. Travel and photography are also passions of mine, as well, whether I’m diving in the Caribbean or exploring Europe and the Far East.
